I’m going to try replying/commenting while listening–on the train. In light of that, and the fact that I’m typing into my phone, I’m hoping you might spare me some of the usual scorn and derision meted out for typos, fractured syntax, etc.

Legal zoom blows, in my professional opinion. Especially for TM registrations. They might be ok for really straightforward things like a simple will or a buy/sell agreement, but on the whole you’re probably better off hiring a lawyer. Im the wake of the economic downturn, theres a lot of hungry solos and fresh grads out there and they’re not nearly as expensive as they used to be.

    I have a question that’s kind of a mash-up of word/phrase origins and Bet’s fun facts (e.g., Tiger’s untimely demise).

What’s up with all the Scots who have Italian surnames? Off the top of my head, I can think of Armando Iannucci (writer/dir., IN THE LOOP); Peter Capaldi (actor, LOCAL HERO, IN THE LOOP, THE HOUR); and musicians Paulo Nutini (“Pencil Full o’ Lead”) and Jon Fratelli, of the Fratellis (“Chelsea Dagger” et al. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=sEXHeTcxQy4&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DsEXHeTcxQy4).

    Any thoughts, insights appreciated.

Trying so hard to catch up – Goodbye to Paw – so sorry Bet. I really hate getting older – had 2 friends my age lose their mom’s recently – damn getting older. Topic suggestion – maybe you have done it – but favorite Disney movie as a child and as an adult?? I keep trying to get Apple Dumpling Gang for Ervin to watch – which was my favorite to catch on TV as a youngster – but I haven’t seen it in ages – wondering if it will be the same when I watch it again. Listening to 312 so I may not make it through 313 yet – but I wanted to say hey – still listening πŸ™‚ Love to you guys!

  3. Dishy says:

I got such a kick out of Kellie signing “Kellie with an ie” that I decided to leave my comments as “Dishy.”

So I’m sure this is from a much older show, but I have to tell you that you should never apologize for running long. Not to us anyhow, or ok, not to me. You guys are one of the reasons that you haven’t heard of anyone committing murder on a Chicago expressway. I feel very unfaithful, but feel I must admit that I’ve been exploring other podcasts to listen to as well. My commute is 2 hours home most days, so I’ve already listened twice by Tuesday.

I feel like I’ve asked you this before, but I don’t remember the answer. Do either of you get Antenna TV? That’s some good TV watchin’. Also, NBC has a digital channel where they show old movies and old NBC shows. Good stuff!

  4. thepete says:

Aw, thanks, but I know the HB is awesome whether or not I leave a comment. I know because sometimes I am late πŸ™ But things have been hectic since I’ve been back and, in a week from now, I’m leaving again. But this time, I’ll be bringing Siskita back with me!

Google Wave is the sadly failed good idea and it’s a shame since it would still be around if it weren’t for google screwing up how they introduced it. First off, it’s a collaboration tool, therefore, you need to give new users the ability to invite people right away or it’s useless (I think I had to wait a few weeks before I could invite Stennie). Plus telling us it was a collaborative tool would have been nice–we had no idea what it was really for when we started using it. And now it’s gone! There’s still an open source version available but it’s a PitA to set up. In fact, Google Wave would have made it much easier for Sierra and I to plan our trip in Europe. Instead we had to talk a lot on the phone and blow several hours of a port call when we could both surf the web together and book our flights/hotels, etc. DAMN YOU, GOOGLLLLLE!

Google Glass is, what I believe to be the next step in mobile computing–or if not the next step, a future one. Put simply, it’s sort of a smart phone that you wear like a pair of glasses (though it works via bluetooth and/or wifi, no actual 3G/4G). It’s not a perfect product yet and Google has been up front about this. But I put a device very similar to Glass in a novel I wrote back in 2009. Since I predicted the device, I feel obliged to support it. I’m actually borrowing the money from my dad to do it. I’m lucky he was willing to sell a stock share or two to help me out. Glass will cost me $1500. But it’s worth it since I believe it’s like buying the first TV set. Only it’s a TV set that you wear on your face, and can channel the Internet through it, onto a little screen above your eye. You may have seen or heard of the bit they did making fun of Glass on SNL. The idea is that eventually our computers will disappear. This and/or the rumored Apple iWatch will be the next step towards “invisible” computers.

What sucks, for me, is that Google may not give them to us before my big trip on the 17th. I would looove to have Glass with me on the final cruise and then on my Europe trip.

Also, have you guys seen my the Skully-Chan plush I had commissioned? I have photos of her on my blog. She is coming with me on the big trip and will be posing for photos in front of neat things we see. I may do an entire issue of thepete.mag.

Bet, I have sooo been there with crying my eyes out to Cinema Paradiso in front of other people. I made a friend once at a film festival because a fellow fan saw me crying and just wanted to give me a hug. We eventually lost touch, but he was a nice guy.

Has Patrick Our Little Love seen “Idiocracy”? That’s a movie that does involve quite a bit of groin hits and it’s also one of my favorite films. It’ll also be easier to find that “Sword of Desperation”.

I actually felt that the violence in “Django Unchained” was restrained. I mean, do you not remember “Kill Bill”? Bloody limbs everywhere? I liked the length of the film, too. I thought it was just right length-wise because it was able to develop character and store really nicely without having to rush things like so many films do. It was very much like a real spaghetti western. Though most spaghetti westerns have simpler stories and therefore shorter run times. DU is the first Tarantino-directed film I actually liked and would willingly see again.

Sten, please take a photo of the TARDIS that’s in the lobby of that theater the next time you go. That sounds sooo cool!

Enough from me, ladies! Thanks for another great episode!

  5. Michelle says:

Because I’m leaving this comment under my real name, it counts as a different comment and you have to answer it.

My favorite movie, I forgot to mention, is still Wings of Desire. The real Wim Wenders movie. Please don’t watch City of Angels. I didn’t. But it is a silly Hollywood version that is for sure to be schlock.

Another favorite is called Mostly Martha in English (sorry, I like German movies.) This movie will make you cry, but it is so worth it. Unlike Wings of Desire, there is a lot of dialogue.

Any other runner up you would have watched already. Like the Princess Bride.

The Google service – the failed one – you were speaking of is Google Wave.

What do you MEAN you don’t like chat? Didn’t we spend 15 years chatting with each other on IRC?? Now I know why chat failed. It wasn’t Mike’s fault at all. Lily, if you’re listening, we should be seriously insulted.

  6. Michelle says:

Ok, there is another movie. I don’t know if you can get it here, because it is a (surprise!) German comedy – a very rare animal. Even rarer is that it is actually FUNNY. The movie is called Knocking on Heaven’s Door. It stars Til Schweiger, who you may know, and Moritz Bleibtreu, who you know if you saw Run Lola Run or Munich. He counts as one of my favorite actors.

Anyhow, I saw it at least 5 times in the theater. Read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knockin%27_on_Heaven%27s_Door_%28film%29 . Heidi, if you find it anywhere, you must tell me. I am dying to see it again.

  7. Moritz Bleibtreu says:

Some of the best bits of the movie are here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0oNBLD4seE Unfortunately there are no subtitles. But watch it. You might like it anyhow.

  8. Donna says:

Okay, so I feel like we have spent the weekend together! We have listened to four episodes and are all caught up so I have a few comments.

From episode 310, Songs of which I never get tired of listening (in no particular order, as you all like to say):
    — Somewhere Over the Rainbow — especially like the Israel “Iz” Kamakawiwo’ole version used on E.R. when Mark Green died.
    — Hallelujah — probably like Jeff Buckley’s version the best; it is just so raw. (Also, this was used on West Wing when Mark Harmon’s character was murdered just when we thought C.J. Cregg was finally going to be happy.)
    — Something in the Way She Moves — James Taylor
    — I like to listen to ABBA’s Greatest Hits when I’m driving and getting sleepy.
    — Proud Mary — the Ike & Tina version
    — two songs by Sweet Honey in the Rock – one called On Children and one called Breaths; both have excellent lyrics.
    — Killing Me Softly With His Song — Roberta Flack
    — When the Saints Go Marching In — especially done by brass bands in NOLA
    — Gather by the River — Davell Crawford
    — I’ll Fly Away
    — What a Wonderful World
    — American Pie (the full version)
    — entire Graceland album
    — Imagine
    — and lastly, I know this is weird but I love America the Beautiful; it is quite possibly my favorite song.

From Episode 311, thanks for the You Rule for nurses. This was Nurses Week so appreciating nurses has been front and center in our house and hospital this week.

From Episode 312, love the Bellingham Parks Project and the favorite movie project. I can not decide on my favorite movie. For about 15 years, I have kept a list of ones we’ve seen in the theatre so I went back over those lists and thought I would list some of those. Basically, we love anything the Dames (Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren) are in and love many other older English actresses like Julie Walters, Penelope Wilton, Annette Crosbie and Brenda Blethyn. If there’s a feel-good movie about “the little person” rising above their circumstances or about some individual deciding to embrace a cause or lead an uprising, that is our kind of movie. Anyway, here’s a list of some that we have enjoyed over the years:
    — Fried Green Tomatoes
    — Rabbit Proof Fence
    — Made in Daganham
    — The Help
    — Invictus
    — Notes on a Scandal
    — Water
    — Saving Grace
    — Calendar Girls
    — The Sapphires (just saw today)

From Episode 312, Bet, just one correction about GHS classes. If you didn’t take Humanities, you had a choice between English and World History OR English and World Geography. I chose the latter because I have always loved geography and maps (and still do!). Unfortunately, I had Coach Saunders who basically just had us drawing maps! No studying involved, that’s for sure. And just for the record, my favorite teacher was Mr. Russell — loved, loved, loved him for Advanced Math and Calculus.

So, that’s my comment. Not as creative as others, but I am happy to be caught up and be able to contribute something. Thanks for letting us listen in on your conversations; you guys are very entertaining and Bet(sy), you are one strong woman.
