Re. endlessly repeated “fucks,” Kurt Vonnegut described such things as “senile burps.”
Hello ladies,
Honestly, I have been too busy this summer to keep up with the podcast, but I had to tune in to hear your RIPs for Robin and Betty. Like you and just about everyone, I was totally shattered by Robin’s death — what a tragedy and such a sad ending for a person who brought so much joy to the rest of us. I immediately downloaded a bunch of his movies, which I haven’t had time to watch since I’m so busy! (summer is the busy season in the ESL biz)
The shock of Robin’s passing kind of overshadowed Ms. Bacall’s death. Of course she was a huge star, and an inspiring woman, but naturally her passing was less surprising due to her age. I’ll never forget her appearance on Letterman about 20 years ago, which impressed me quite a bit regarding her strength of character. She had just written one of her memoirs called “Now” about her life as a mature woman who reinvented herself after Bogie’s death. Dave kept showing old pictures of her from the ’40s and wanted to rehash stories of the good ol’ days. But Betty would have none of it! She told him directly she wasn’t interested in reliving in the past and was more interested in the world today. Dave finally gave up and gave her a star send-off as she exited the stage before commercial, but as he sat again at his desk just before the fade out, he was clearly frustrated (at her or himself?) and proceeded to rip the blue interview cards in half before throwing them off the desk. Although I would have loved to hear those old stories again, I really appreciated her persistence in not being manipulated by him and standing her ground. She was definitely a tough lady.
Anyway, wish I had more to respond with, although I am excited about your Freaks & Geeks commentaries! Remember, I started watching the series a while ago? Well I got busy and didn’t finish it, but now I want to start over and enjoy your commentaries alongside it. Hope y’all are well….take care!! xoxoxoxo
Glad you also thought that Millie was starting the Entertainer! I think that her and Nick singing was just hilarious. I just love how she just stands her ground and is going to have a good time without ‘alcohol’ – too funny. And the switching of the beer idea – I guess I just think that is so sweet that they want to try to protect Lindsey!
That Ghost Squadron (or something like that) was really an interesting fact about how they made the fake tanks, etc.! Very cool. Kinda like these of the Lockheed plant:

I find that stuff fascinating and amazing that someone can picture how to make that look real!!
