Episode 159

Hucklebug, Episode 159: RIP Ferrante (of Ferrante and Teicher, whoever they are) and obscure TV actor Robert Ginty; shout-outs; happy (?) Yom Kippur; movies (Bet: Our Winning Season, Saturday Night & Sunday Morning, Nobody Knows; Stennie: Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Nothing Sacred, A Face in the Crowd); highlights & lowlights; fuck-offs and you-rules; some Top Fives.

NOTE:  Our recording cut out when we still had about five minutes left to record, so we started a new session, and in those last five minutes or so the sound is a little garbled on my end. I tried to figure out how to fix it but couldn’t.  We also recorded the intro and out-tro to next week’s outtake show at the same time, that is also garbled—but I’ll try to find a fix before next weekend.

Music:  β€œThe Hucklebuck,” performed by Otis Redding, Lee Rocker, and Frank Sinatra.

Starting a show with math is almost up there with playing Jenga. Yuck!

Your credit score does matter if you are trying to get a mortgage these days. Lower scores don’t qualify – I think it is anything below 680.

Ohhh, I haite the ‘pant’ thing myself. Nobody – not even designers – should get to say that. Well, unless of course they are designing pants for people who only have only one leg.

I have seen every episode of:
    Arrested Development
    Boston Legal
    M*A*S*H*
    The Dick Van Dyke Show
    The Monkees.

Five Things You Should Put in a Trap if You Want to Catch Me:

    Marshall Crenshaw
    Stiegl Beer
Austrian or Swiss Chocolate – Milk, not dark
    A Puppy
Marshall Crenshaw holding a puppy, eating chocolate and drinking a Stiegl.

Btw, I mainly posted that Mary Travers “libertine” story because I know that’s how Stennie introduces herself to people.

P.J. Soles and Dennis Quaid did indeed meet up on that movie.  Speaking of introductions, the role I always think of for P.J. Soles is in Rock And Roll High School, where she introduces herself as “Riff Randell, rock and roller.”  I do believe that’s what Bet does.

Since you’re taking topics from facebook, how about the top five list I just did—favorite movies from 2000 to present.  My list, as best as I can recall:

    In The Mood For Love
    The Lives Of Others
    Once
    Zatoichi
    Kill Bill Vol. 1

And a wicked ton of honorable mentions.

And the Beatles mono box set is THE set to own.  Many of the songs sound better mixed in mono.  Case in point: Paperback Writer in stereo lacks the punch that the mono version has.  Stereo is for pussies anyway.

A short comment on your Note above. I don’t know the cause of your recording problem or garbled voices but I had similar problems with Skype. It conflicted with other programs too and wasn’t very stable. I stopped using it in favor of Google Voice and haven’t had any more problems.

You might give it a try if Skype keeps acting up. Maybe you have already. Just a comment.

  5. Mike says:

Damn, so my comment last night got eaten?  Let’s try again.

The main reason I posted the Mary Travers “libertine” story is that I know that’s how Stennie introduces herself to people.

PJ Soles and Dennis Quaid did indeed meet during the filming of that movie.  Speaking of introductions, the PJ Soles role I always think of when I see her is from Rock And Roll High School, where she introduces herself as “Riff Randell, rock and roller.”  This is how I imagine Bet introducing herself to people.

(And if Bet gives the movie one star, it’s gotta be worth seeing.)

And as long as you’re taking topics from facebook top five lists, how about using the list I just did over the weekend, top 5 movies from 2000 onward?  My list:

    In The Mood For Love
    The Lives Of Others
    Once
    Zatoichi
    Kill Bill Vol. 1

That’s backed up by a whole host of honorable mentions.

And don’t poo-poo the Beatles mono box.  That’s the one to have.  Many of the songs were engineered better for mono.  Case in point: Paperback Writer in mono sounds like a punch in the face.  Stereo is for wimps.

    Mike with comments so nice,
    He runs them twice.

just kidding Mike, I’ve had posts do that to me too.

  8. Mike says:

    I can only blame Stennie.

  9. ThePete says:

Gah! Robert Ginty was too young!  MST3K fans know him as “The Paperchase Guy” who was in “Warrior of the Lost World” a wonderfully cheese-ball post-apocalyptic movie starring Ginty as a scruffy-looking, talking-motorcycle-riding Road-Warrior-type guy who must free the future from the evil despotism of Donald Pleasence.

Yay! I’m so glad you guys liked Jay’s dancing!  We had stopped doing it for a while because no one reacted to it and it’s hard tracking down wacky music every day.  Jay and I would LOVE suggestions!

Sten, you’re right, Jay’s website is http://jay.thepal.us but he’s also on Twitter (@JayThePal) and Facebook.com/JayThePal

Glad you enjoyed the YOU LIE video, Sten! smile I need to cut together more of those short compilations. I’ve just been swamped with lots of behind-the-scenes stuff on my various web enterprises so I’ve not been doing many in-front-of-the-scenes things much lately.  Just active on the Twitter since that’s the easiest, but Jay’s been taking a loooong nap smile  I have decided to cut together a compilation of just Jay footage from our trip to DC back in January, too—another documentary like his 140conference one.  Did you guys watch the DewLabs tasting video or the DewLabs Kit unboxing?  I can’t remember.

If anyone is new to Jay and wants a good 10-minute primer, check out “Who Is Jay ThePal?” which you can see here: http://thepal.us/a/WhoIsJayThePal/

Thanks for the mentions you guys! Glad Jay is continuing to entertain!

Thanks for the credit report info! Always helpful…

It’s ridiculous that they’ve banned flavored cigs. I am not and will never be a smoker, but how many other things are bad for us that are everywhere?  Sugary cereals and foods are advertised to children CONSTANTLY yet flavored cigarettes are banned because the flavors might entice kids to do something unhealthy for them.  Yeah, like eating fricken Fruit Loops, sodas and candy every day isn’t bad for them??

A pant is the way you breathe after running or exerting yourself physically.

I enjoyed all of the Top Fives except the one about what TV channels I must have.  I realized, as I listened, that I don’t really watch TV—at all. I get all of my programming online or via Netflix. Anime runs on websites now, Daily Show and Colbert are online, too.  I guess you could say I’d need BBC and Discovery Channel so I could watch Doctor Who and Mythbusters, but if I wait long enough they’ll be on DVD, as well.

    Die, TV, DIE!

    smile

I was wondering why there were so many comments already! Poor Mike the Double-Posted! πŸ™

  10. LilyG. says:

I was all concerned when I got up this morning (Tuesday) and downloaded the episode and saw there were so many comments already. But it was just Mike. Whew. I thought I was seriously behind the listening curve.

I got my credit reports recently before applying for a new mortgage. I do like how all three agencies can look at the exact same data and come up with a different score. One of them was a hard-ass, and marked me down for something that still was “pays your bill in full every month, and has never been late.” What the hell does it matter how much my current balance is on the day I run the report if I pay the damn thing off each month? It is kind of funny when they try to give you advice on how to improve your credit, which shows they’ve never read your report like “pay your bills in full each month. Don’t carry a balance.”

    Five TV shows…

    Babylon Five
    Star Trek
    ST:TNG
    Lost
(For the fifth, I’d have to assume I Love Lucy and probably M*A*S*H*)
(hanging my head in geek shame)

Five things to put in a trap to catch me

    George.
    Clooney.
That guy from the Ocean’s movies.
That guy who played the pediatrician in ER
A small boy who likes Elmo

5 TV shows I’ve seen every ep:
    1. Red Dwarf
    2. Quantum Leap
    3. Mystery Science Theater 3000 (except for the 4 “lost” eps)
    4. Spaced
    5. Star Trek: The Next Generation

and yes, I have been busy singing!!!! Ahhhhhhh!
