Friendly’s was a great place for a group. In my early days in Richmond, we used to go after church or choir practice for lunch/dinner and/or just ice-cream. They had a “Happy Ending Sundae” that was either free or very cheap if you ordered real food first. Some of the locations closed a few years ago but some are still open.

Bet, after listening to the podcast, I thought, did we even grow up in the same place? Two of the places I had never heard of but vaguely remember where they were. We never ate at The Beacon but clearly remember being able to see the beacon from our neighborhood on clear night. I only ate at the KDI once and it was after it was past its prime and possibly even under different ownership. However, I loved eating Pig Pruitt’s place. Before we started going to Parkview Baptist (in the neighborhood where Bet & I grew up), we were members of Edgemont Baptist, so very close to The Little Pig. We would go there after church on Sunday nights. Dad would always want to go but mom would also get mad — not sure if it was because of the money (quite possibly), or the fact that “we have food at home” or that it meant getting home late on a school night. Great memories, though! The other place I remember was the first fast food restaurant on Bluefield Avenue (yes, Stennie, on the WV side) — it was my first introduction to those great, skinny, fast food fries — I think they cost 19 cents.

Hey you F&G fans, did you listen to the Terrie Gross interview with Judd Apatow a few weeks ago? If not, look for the podcast.
